1984

In response to the 2022 ISTD brief: Shaping the World, design a typographically focused publication that responds to the contextual significance of one of the books listed in “100 Books that Shaped the World.”

Specifically aimed at youth, young adults, and those with a rebellious streak, I have created a set of four zines centred around George Orwell’s 1984. They each focus on why the novel’s enduring message and warning for humanity is still so relevant 70 years after it was published. In our world today, it comments on government control, social media, fake news, censorship, and the rise of surveillance technology all around us. I want to inspire rebellion and resistance against conformity, and encourage readers to use the issues raised in 1984 to question the world around us. The publication tells a disjointed but important story, with the dissected zine form embodying themes of secrecy, censorship, and the manipulation of truth.
